Excavations at an archaeological site in Bahrain are shedding light on one of the oldest trading civilisations.
Despite its antiquity, comparatively little is known about the advanced culture represented at Saar.
The site in Bahrain, thought to be the location of the enigmatic Dilmun civilisation, was recently discussed at a conference in Manama, the Gulf nation’s capital, organised by the UN’s educational, scientific and cultural body (Unesco).
The meeting was devoted to wide-ranging debate on heritage tourism; Bahrain is a Unesco regional headquarters and one of its key attractions is an abundance of ancient sites. Read more.
Ha, I got an invitation to my great grandmother’s burial ceremony thing (apparently she wanted her ashes to be buried at sea..but also apparently last wishes aren’t legally binding, so she get’s to go underground instead) and it’s got a dress code.
…only in my family would they even think of that. I mean do that expect people to show up in a bathing suit unless specifically told not to?
(Also, I’m really surprised at getting an invitation at all. I mean, I’m not gonna fly over there for it but getting one seems to suggest that someone thought I ought to. And what if that’s a thing now and they start inviting me to family functions and eventually I’ll have to go to them because there’s only so many versions of “yeah ain’t coming” you can RSVP before it gets old. And..ugh…families)

Leafy Sea Dragons
These stunning sea dragon pictures illuminate their mysterious beauty and extraordinary adaptations. The near-invisibility of their fins gives the sea dragons the appearance of floating seaweed that is drifting with the currents. Instead of scales, they have protective armor to ward off predators. The row of spines along their backs can also wound attackers. At other times they will curl into balls like porcupines in self defense. Truly extraordinary creatures.
